Cornus Arctic Fire Red Dogwood

Transform your garden into a year-round spectacle with the Cornus Arctic Fire Red Dogwood. This selection, from the Proven Winners ColorChoice Flowering Shrub, was bred by the esteemed Michael Farrow of Holly Hill Nursery, is perfect for modern, smaller gardens and patio containers. Its compact size and exceptional red stems make it a standout choice for adding bright winter color and seasonal interest to any landscape.

Reaching just 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, this dwarf dogwood variety boasts a neat and tidy habit that requires minimal pruning. The Arctic Fire Red Dogwood is renowned for its intense, fire-red stems that glow in the winter garden, offering a striking contrast against snowy landscapes or bare ground. These vibrant branches are not only a visual delight but also a unique addition to holiday floral arrangements and winter decor.

As the seasons change, so does the beauty of this versatile shrub. In late spring, it bursts into bloom with clusters of small, flat-topped white flowers that add a delicate touch to your garden. Come late summer, these blooms give way to attractive white berries that draw songbirds, adding life and movement to your outdoor space. The show continues into autumn when the foliage transforms to a rich reddish-purple, proving that this dogwood truly is a four-season marvel.

Caring for the Cornus Arctic Fire Red Dogwood is straightforward and low maintenance. It thrives in both full sun and part shade, making it adaptable to various garden settings. Plant it in well-draining soil and ensure it receives consistent moisture, especially during its first growing season to establish strong roots. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant, making it a resilient choice for many climates.

Pruning is minimal with this compact variety. However, if you wish to shape the plant or encourage the growth of new stems for the most vibrant winter color, it’s best to prune right after it finishes flowering in late spring. This timing allows the buds to set for the following year’s growth.

Whether you’re looking to create a focal point in a small garden, add vibrant color to a container on your patio, or enhance your landscape with a four-season beauty, the Cornus Arctic Fire Red Dogwood is an exceptional choice. Its compact size, easy care, and spectacular seasonal displays make it a valuable addition to any garden.
