Planting & Care

Planting: The Cleyera Japonica shrub thrives in both sun and shade, making it easy to grow in various locations. Protect it from strong winds, as they can cause damage. It prefers full sun or partial shade, but in hotter climates, it needs more afternoon shade. While not ideal, it can tolerate full shade if its other needs are met. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but should be planted in a protected area.

Watering: Cleyera bushes thrive in moist soil when young or newly transplanted. Once established, they become drought-tolerant and need less water. Avoid pooling water around the roots to prevent root rot. They prefer well-draining soil but are not picky about soil type.

Fertilizing: Ensure that the soil is rich in nutrients for optimal growth. The soil should contain a high amount of organic matter, so applying compost once or twice a year will greatly benefit it. If composting isnt practical, consider using a slow-release fertilizer to supply the necessary nutrients.

Pruning: Pruning Cleyera Japonica isn’t required, but it’s beneficial due to its vigorous growth. For hedges and foundation plants, you may need to prune more often to maintain their shape. You can prune whenever you want to achieve your desired look.
